How often should I have my chimney swept? Most gas and oil appliances do not require the chimney to be swept but all solid–fuel and wood burning appliances, open fire or closed stove, lined or un-lined chimneys should be swept at least every 12 months.
How often should I service my fire? Gas and oil appliances should be serviced on an annual basis by a qualified heating engineer (some appliances need bi-annual servicing, check manufacturers instructions). Solid-fuel and woodburning appliances should be cleaned out and spares replaced at the end of each heating season. By cleaning out the appliance and spraying with WD40 or equivelant and leaving the doors adjar at the end of the heating season will help stop the onset of rust over the summer months when the appliance is not in use.
What should I use to clean the glass on my stove? We sell a product called Stovax Glass Cleaner which is designed specifically for cleaning the glass on Multi-fuel and woodburning stoves. It is also good for cleaning the enamelled tops of Rayburn’s, AGA’s and other range cookers.
Can I burn house coal on my stove? Although some manufacturers do say in their instructions that you can burn house coal on their stoves we advise that it should only be burnt on an open fire. House coal burns very hot and very fast which can cause bottom grates to burn out much quicker. It also produces larger amounts of soot which means the stove and flue require more regular cleaning. Some metal chimney liners are also not suitable for the burning of house coal.
